Overview

On March 13, 1997, thousands of people across Arizona, including the Governor Fife Symington III, witnessed a massive, V-shaped formation of lights slowly moving across the sky. The event, which lasted for several hours, remains one of the most widely reported mass UFO sightings in history.

Investigation

The sightings were reported by civilians, military personnel, and even the state governor. Two distinct events were reported: a V-shaped formation of lights that passed over the state, and a series of stationary lights observed later over Phoenix. The U.S. Air Force initially attributed the lights to flares dropped by A-10 Warthog aircraft during a training exercise. However, this explanation was met with skepticism, particularly regarding the V-shaped formation.

Why it matters

The Phoenix Lights incident is significant due to the sheer number of credible witnesses, including a high-ranking government official. It highlights the challenges in providing satisfactory explanations for widespread anomalous aerial phenomena and continues to fuel public interest in UFOs and government transparency.
